The Lord Mayor of Chester

Councillor Alex Black and Janet, the Lady Mayoress were raised in Weaverham, Cheshire and met at school, Verdin Grammer School, Winsford.
Alex was elected by the people of Hoole in elections in 2011 and 2015 and he will be retiring from the Council at the end of this civic year. Janet was a member of Chester City Council for 8 years until 2008. They have been married since 1962 and have a son, daughter and twin grandsons, born in 2006 with whom they are deeply involved.
Alex was a Police Officer in the Cheshire Constabulary, retiring in 1992 after 30 years service and Janet worked in the banking industry before taking up employment at the College of Law in Christleton as the Accommodation Officer. She retired in 2004.
They have previously been honoured with civic roles in the city. Alex was Sheriff of Chester, 2015 to 2016 – a most enjoyable time of their lives. Alex worships at ‘All Saints’ Parish Church, Hoole and his Chaplain for the year is the Vicar of ‘All Saints’ the Reverend John Kirkland.
Their theme for the year is ‘encouragement and inclusion of the younger generations’, and their charities are Merseyside and Cheshire Blood bikes, who are a team of volunteers who convey blood for transfusion and tissue for transplantation for our National Health Service. SPACE, who are an independent charity who run play sessions and activities for children with disabilities and additional needs.
