The Lord Mayor of Chester
Cllr John Leather
John was born in the East End of London and attended Dame Alice Owens Grammar School in Islington. He has degrees in mathematics and mechanical engineering and carried out research at Imperial College before moving to the Thornton Research Centre in 1979.
His career included liaising with a Formula One racing team, troubleshooting in the North Sea, and government relations. In 1990 he was seconded into the Cabinet Office to work on aspects of national science policy.
John played bridge competitively for many years and has been president of the Deva Bridge Club.
He met his wife, Heather, at a ballroom dancing class in London and she was delighted to return to live in her native Cheshire. They have three children and one grandson, and they share a love of classical music.
They have both been involved in voluntary activities in their community and John was elected to the Kelsall Parish Council for the first time in 2003.
He has represented the Tarvin and Kelsall Ward since 2011.
